A short history of the With Sympathy card

Acceptable expressions of sympathy can be difficult and can vary across different cultures. The decision to send a With Sympathy card really depends on the relationship or dept of friendship with the bereaved but it is probably true to say that With Sympathy cards will always be welcome at a time when someone is experiencing grief, suffering and emotion. Thus, this simple expression of sympathy can increase social bonds while denying it could cause hurt. With this open expression, most cultures expect the displaying of sympathy to bereaved persons following a death to be acceptable. The sending of With Sympathy cards is also another form of offering concern for mourners. In the Western culture, sympathy cards are a meaningful and easy way to convey support to someone in a state of bereavement dut this practice can be different in other cultures. In Chinese and Egyptian cultures small pieces of papyrus with writings expressing general sympathy were exchanged. In Europe, the tradition of sending written good wishes were always handmade and started around 1400s and continued through the centuries. The growth of With Sympathy cards really expanded with the discovery of lithography and the development of the postage stamp in the middle of the 19th century. Beautifully illustrated images of the white lily and religious icons like the holy cross were introduced. Sensitive poems were written and superbly crafted calligraphy added to the feeling of dignity. It is important to use With Sympathy cards with a degree of sensitivity and realise they are not appropriate support by themselves. Often after the funeral, the bereaved person is in more need of sympathy and support than before as many people find the subject of death difficult to handle. Keep any inscription in the With Sympathy card short and be wary stirring up painful emotions at a difficult time.

If you need to discuss specific design, typographic or illustration requirements, especially if it is a challenge, please do do hesitate to contact Peter or Rebecca at enquiry@celtic-1.co.uk
