The development of the 'Thank You' card

Ever experienced the need to say 'thank you' to someone who has done a favour, no matter how small? A well-designed and considered Thank You card will always be welcome. It demonstrates that the action has not passed unrecorded and has been appreciated. The sheer joy of receiving a card like this will convey a feeling of appreciation especially accompanied by a bottle of good wine! It is often the smallest actions that evoke the greatest pleasure and sometimes mild surprise. How many times has a friend or relative given a present or just offered moral support at a time of great need? It costs surprisingly little to record the act and will always create an even firmer bond. And let's face it, we all love receiving a greeting card, especially a totally unexpected With Thanks card? Historically greeting cards like the traditional Thank You card began a new wave of social expression sometime in the 1400's. Before that time it was only the wealthy who could afford hand-made cards and pay to have them delivered. Greeting cards really grew into a major industry around 1840 with the development of the postage stamp that allowed all people to send greeting cards. This era also saw the growth of lithographic printers and the hiring of many brilliant artists and illustrators. It is interesting that in America there is currently a movement to create a 'Thank You' day to thank all those who have may our lives that much easier. We do hope this concept does not gain momentum as the idea of Thank You must be spontaneous and not triggered by a date on a calendar. Enough said!
If you need to discuss specific design, typographic or illustration requirements, especially if it is a challenge, please do do hesitate to contact Peter or Rebecca at enquiry@celtic-1.co.uk
