She is the Welsh patron saint of friendshp and love. Dwynwen, the daughter of Brychan Brycheiniog, the King of Wales, lived during the 5th century and was famous for her great beauty. The legend tells us that Dwynwen had fallen in love with Maelon Dafodrill, but unfortunately her father had already made other arrangements. Maelon discovered this, lost his temper, and left her. Distraught, Dwynwen turned to God and requests He removes her love for Maelon. Subsequently, she was granted three wishes in a dream. An angel visits her with a magic potion. She drinks the potion and was turned to ice. Dwynwen then prays that Maelon be released from her love and God will there forth look after all true lovers. Dwynwen remained unmarried. Her requests being granted she decides to spend the rest her life devoted to God. St Dwynwen’s Day has become more popular recently and many Welsh speakers now celebrate their relationship instead of St Valentine’s Day which is in February.
