The origins of Saint David's Day

Saint David is the patron saint of Wales and is known as Dewi Sant in the Welsh language. He lived in the 6th century and was a Celtic monk, abbot and bishop. Being instrumental in spreading Christianity among the pagan Celtic tribes of western Britain, Saint David also became the archbishop of Wales. From his biographer, Rhigyfarch, is clear from his writings that he lived a very fugal life. Although he ate mainly bread and herbs, he was tall, and physically strong. Possibly due to his diet and life-style he lived to over 100 years and it is generally accepted that he died around 589. It is claimed that Dewi was of royal lineage and his father was the son of Ceredig, the prince of Ceredigion. Non, the daughter of a local chieftain, was his mother who, it is claimed, was also a niece of King Arthur. Saint David (or Dewi Sant) was born near Capel Non (Non's chapel) on the South-West Wales coast of Wales and was educated in a monastery called Hen Fynyw by Paulinus who was a blind monk. Unusually Saint David travelled far throughout Wales, the south and west of England and Cornwall as well as Brittany. Saints Padarn and Teilo, his two friends, accompanied him on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to meet the Pope. Saint David was canonised by Pope Callactus the Second in 1129, and March 1st was included in the Church calendar. This was the first date to be celebrated as Saint David's Day. There is much written about Saint David and it is not certain how much of the history is fact and how much speculation. During renovations at St. David's Cathedral at he end of 1996 bones were uncovered. These bones were claimed to be from Saint David but this story was later to be disproved and the bones were found to be medieval. Regardless of this, Saint David is a very important figure to the Welsh, and Saint David's Day is always celebrated with vigour and religious fervour.

If you need to discuss specific design, typographic or illustration requirements, especially if it is a challenge, please do do hesitate to contact Peter or Rebecca at enquiry@celtic-1.co.uk
