How the birthday card developed

Special events often demand specialist personalised birthday cards designed by artists like Peter and Rebecca Kitchin. Your birthday can often 'flag up' an even more special event that can only be 'tripped' by the birthday. These special events include significant numbers like 1, 10, 21, 50, 100, or you may gain a voting right or allow you to consume alcohol or tobacco. You may also be ligible for military service, although in the UK this is unlikely at present. Coming of age issues can be tripped like a bar mitzvah on Jewish boys' 13th birthday. Jewish girls observe a bat mitzvah on their 12th or 13th birthday in Reform and Conservative Judaism societies while many USA girls have "sweet sixteen" birthday parties.
More holidays have been created by the birthdays of important people like Jesus, Muhammad, or Martin Luther King, Jr.
Historically people in the Western Civilisation have found it particularly difficult to convey good wishes and love to an other person. This is especially true in the UK where we have a long history of embarrassment whenever the need to demonstrate affection. Birthday cards have always prove a useful 'bridge' and the selection of the card and the inscription inside carries special importance to the person who receives the card. Personalised birthday cards carry that personal touch that makes them endearing and totally unique. Emotionally charged personalised birthday cards help to convey feelings of love that most people find difficult to express.
This huge and growing market has seen a proliferation of designs, some beautifully illustrated and other not so beautiful but even a poorly illustrated humorous card can make a meaningful statement regarding ones relationship.
To cater for this growing demand, card manufacturers commissioned artists to design cards that depicted a variety of emotions from sentimental to humorous.
Birthday cards, like all greeting cards, were originally developed by the ancient Chinese who are said to have started the tradition of sending goodwill messages on a New Year. Egyptians are also credited with developing papyrus scrolls to convey sentimental messages. The use of handmade paper greeting cards in Europe began around the early 1400's with the use of especially beautiful woodcuts that still exist today. Louis Prang is accredited with really accelerating the birthday card industry in 1850's with the introduction of his small lithographic business near Boston. Further technical developments meant that longer print runs were possible and the unit cost came within everybody's reach.
