How the Mothering Sunday / Mother's Day card developed Mothering Sunday falls on different dates every year and occasionally can fall in a different month. It is always celebrated on the middle Sunday in Lent which lasts from Ash Wednesday to the day before Easter Sunday. Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent since at least the 16th century. Many churches have a special ceremony when the children in the congregation bring a little bunch of spring flowers to give to their Mothers as a way of saying thank you for all their care and love throughout the year. Historically, Mothering Sunday has been a Christian festival and celebrated throughout Europe. It is used as a celebration of motherhood not only as the mother bearing a child but also the mother church. A religious festival celebrating motherhood has been existent in Europe since Neolithic times. It was in Roman times that the festival Mothering Sunday was in honour of the mother goddess Cybele (also known as Kybele and Magna Mater and the Mother of the Gods, the worship of this goddess rapidly spread throughout the Roman Empire). This festival took place during mid-March. As the Roman Empire and Europe converted to Christianity, Mothering Sunday celebrations became part of the Christian calendar. The giving of spring flowers picked by small children has always been associated with Mothering Sunday along with the giving of Mothering Sunday cards. It is a natural progression that the designs and illustrations on these cards have always been influenced by the bright fresh colours associated with Spring and also the form and shape of spring flowers. Mothering Sunday should not be confused with Mother's Day which is an annual holiday in the United States that also recognizes mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds, as well the major contributions that they make to society. In America it is also usual to give illustrated and personalised Mother's Day cards.
