The history of Christening cards

Christenings were conducted in the Church from the earliest times when Christ gave the Great Commission for all men to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Christians took on board the concept of the Christening and spread salvation to the whole world. Whole families read the holy scriptures and began to understand the importance of being baptized as a group, and that included the children. Some called the practice of baptising children paedobaptism and it remains remarkably consistent across many cultures and time periods of the Christian faith. Following a period of intolerance, beatings and flogging, the practice of baptism really took hold after the 2nd and 3rd century A.D. Eventually, most churches were taking on the practice and now the message can be spread to friends and family with christening invitations  without fear . Nowadays the family and friends gather in churches and a priest performs the baptism ceremony. It is common that the baby is sprinkled with holy water and a few phrases are said over it. Frequently the baby's head is anointed with holy oil. It is customary that the baby wears a white dress which is often passed down through generations. A gathering in the parent's home usually follows a baptism where food is laid out. All this activity is usually accompanied by the sending and receiving of Baptism invitation cards. The designs, illustrations and typography usually reflect the joyous occasion and the visual content often falls into two distinct areas like religious and fun. Religious images are usually the cross and drawings of a church and baptism fonts, while the sectarian images are often caricatures of sweet little babies, prams and groups of any small pretty animal you can think of. Gifts are often given like engraved silver spoons, plates and pendant on chain.
If you need to discuss specific design, typographic or illustration requirements, especially if it is a challenge, please do do hesitate to contact Peter or Rebecca at enquiry@celtic-1.co.uk
