well soon card 12How the Get Well card developed
Sending greeting cards like 'get well' cards to friends and family is a
tradition that goes back about 200 years. Unfortunately they were mostly sent
by the elite and wealthy in the early to mid 1800's. As the elaborate
illustrations and complex pop-up type cards were very expensive few people
could afford to purchase them. The few 'get well' cards that were produced were hand
delivered but soon gained mass popularity with the introduction of the world's
first postage stamp issued in 1840.
As the industry grew more ambitious printer's and manufacturer's were
perfecting printing methods, hiring artists and designed both elaborate
expensive cards as well as simple affordable ones by the 1850's. It was about
this time the traditional 'Get Well' card gained popularity. It was felt that
the bright and ornate designs aided recovery and today, they are still as
popular as ever.
