How the Father's Day card developed
Father's Day is a day of commemoration and celebration of the person we
call Dad - that means the special man in our life. It is an opportunity to thank him for
the sacrifices he has made to bring you up, and also to show and express our
love and care to this man. Today the 'special man' may not be your father but
will certainly be acting as a father figure in your life - whether as
Stepfather, Uncle, Grandfather, or even your Big Brother. Expressing ones
love may include burnt toast, cold tea in bed and even a personlisedFather's Day card.
This card should not necessarily be purchased from a shop or by mail order,
just a scribbled image with coloured crayon on a piece card will get the
message over.
Historically, there appears to be two dates when the first Father's Day card
was created.
The first date was around 4,000 years ago when a young boy named Elmusu
wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life by carving a
Father's Day message on a card made out of clay. Today there is no trace of
this clay card, Elmesu or his father, but the tradition has continued to day.
The second date was around 1909 when Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first
proposed the concept of a Father's Day. She was looking for a special day to
honour her father, William Smart who was a Civil War veteran. William
Smart's wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. He raised the
newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern
Washington state. Mrs. Dodd realized the strength and selflessness her
father had shown in raising his children as a single parent when she was
grown up.
This first Father's Day was observed on June 19th, 1910 in Spokane
Washington.
Even President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day
and President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring
the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day in 1966. It was about that time that
Father's Day became popular and the design and illustration of Father's Day
cards flourished.
