How the Easter Sunday card developedThe resurrection of Jesus Christ is commemorated by the annual festival of Easter Sunday and is
acknowledged to be one of the principal feast of the Christian year. On varying dates between March 22
and April 25 it is always celebrated on a Sunday and is therefore called a movable feast. Several other
ecclesiastical festivals, extending over a period between Septuagesima Sunday (the ninth Sunday before
Easter Sunday) and the first Sunday of Advent, are fixed in relation to the date of Easter. The 40-day
penitential season of Lent is connected with the observance of Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and
concludes at midnight on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. Holy Week, starts on
Palm Sunday, includes Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion, and terminates with Holy Saturday.
The Octave of Easter extends from Easter Sunday through the following Sunday. In early Christian
times, during the Octave of Easter, the newly baptized wore white garments which signifies joy,
light and purity.
The Jewish festival of Passover is related to the Christian Easter. Passover, or Pesach another name
for Easter. Being brought up in the Hebrew tradition, the early Christians, many of whom were of
Jewish origin and regarded Easter as a new feature of the Passover festival. This became a
celebration of the advent of the Messiah as foretold by the prophets. More recently Easter
Sunday is celebrated with the giving of cards. As well as religious symbols of Christ and the
resurrection the designs on the cards also portrayed the elements of spring. The concept of
the season and renewed life was illustrated by sprig flowers, especially daffodils.
Easter Sunday for the year 2010 is on the 4th April. This 2010 Easter date
applies to the western calendar (Catholic and Protestant Churches), as well as
the The Eastern Orthodox church. This is an unusual This event is very unusual
since both branches of Christianity have different ways for calculating the
correct date for Easter. There are only a few years each century when the Easter
dates match like this so Easter 2010 is seen as extra special.
The Easter date moves every year because, in the year 325AD, the Roman Emperor
Constantine called the early Christian leaders together at Nicea to reach
agreement regarding many issues of doctrine including the dates of important
Christian events such as Easter. They agreed that Easter would fall on the first
Sunday after the full moon following the vernal equinox; (as opposed to
Christmas day which they fixed as 25th December).
